It cannot be stated enough how truly small the real estate world is. For example, a few weeks ago, we interviewed an agent who decided that our office wasn’t the right fit for all of us involved, this being a totally fine and completely understandable personal decision. As a general rule, you need to be polite and respectful of everyone in life, no matter what. It’s just a simple principle that, ideally, we should all aspire to live daily. Be especially polite within whatever your work arena, whatever your chosen profession, because odds are, if it’s anything like real estate, you just might come across one another once again…
So, Mr. X Agent comes in to interview and decides to decline a position with Russell Realty Group and go to Real Estate Office XYZ. In such a situation, you have two options on how you can respond to this situation:
1.) You can get upset, or
2.) Wish them the best of luck in all sincerity and politeness. Why? Because you never know when you might find yourselves together. When my personal clients make their way to an open house on Sunday, guess whom the agent just might be?
What are the odds that it’s that same agent that declined a position with Russell Realty Group. Again, it’s a small world and this happens all the time. Had I been rude to them and said something condescending or sarcastic and insincere just because they decided to go in a different direction, do you think that my clients would have been received in the same manner had I been nothing but polite and encouraging of their personal decision? It can make all the difference in the world from a disparaging remark about myself from the slighted agent or an encouraging one from them about how great a guy I am remembered to be.
A positive reputation in the marketplace is key. Nothing is more important than your reputation, especially within the small intricate group of real estate agents. When coming across people who may choose or choose not to participate in business with you, or end up having a transaction that may or may not go well, never lose your integrity. Never lose your cool. Always be polite, always be calm, treat everyone you meet with respect, and the results will be stellar in comparison had you not been as nice as you could be. Kindness shall prevail.
